It’s not that often that you get to shake hands with an American Icon, let alone somebody that has stepped foot onto another planet. “THE MOON” Today as I sat at the Stephenville Clark Field Airport studying for my commercial pilot checkride and visiting with local flight instructor Robert Johnston, we had a surprise guest land and taxi up to the fuel pumps. There was a young lady there waiting on this gentlemen to pick him up to go and look at a horse for his granddaughter. We asked who this person was, and to our surprise it was Astronaut Gene Cernan. Of course Roberts eyes just about popped out with excitement. You see Gene Cernan has been a hero to Robert all of his life and now he was going to get to meet this hero! I too have to admit that it was pretty incredible getting to meet the last Astronaut to ever step foot on the moon. In fact “his foot print” was the last one left behind! How cool is that!!!! It was a great honor to meet Mr. Cernan and will always leave an impression upon me of what you can achieve if you put your heart and soul into making your dreams a reality. Pictured below is ME, Astronaut Gene Cernan, Student Pilot Brooks Modesitt, and Flight Instructor Robert Johnston.
Gene Cernan has a rich history in the United States Space Program. “Captain Cernan first made history in America’s space program as the Pilot of Gemini 9. He later served as Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 10 and the Commander of Apollo 17. After flying to the moon not once but twice, he also holds the distinction of being the second American to walk in space and the last man to have left his footprints on the lunar surface.” – www.genecernan.com
